Have finished some various scrapes of watercolor paper and now on to my 2 new Canson 300gm spiral watercolor pads, A4, A5.  Have even started one, and on the first page.

I use the technique I learned from Stan Kurth last September, which seems like ages ago, called Intuitive Painting with Watercolor, Ink and Gouache. I block out the size on the pad and start with a water-soluble ink pen, making intuitive mark-making, wetting with water and my finger to make smudges. Sometimes wet the paper and put ink marks. One can use watercolor pencils, water-soluble graphite and other mark making tools. Using watercolor washes over the ink, also intuitively. Going back with pen and editing with more opaque gouache. Stan does this complete process in one sitting, as his demonstration, but I like to work doing a few ink starts. Next day adding watercolor, and then another time to the editing process, which is the most difficult. As soon as my thinking process kicks in, I am in big trouble.

All That Light Day 25

Day 25  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

I am really loving working with the printed tissue papers. Like the veiling effects.  A layer of random brayer marks, usually cleaning my brayer added collage pieces tissue paper pieces and added a bit of inktense pencils.

Time Is Running Out Day 24

Day 24  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

Collage of Gelli-printed tissue paper pieces on a background of brayer marks plus magazine collage. On the original background, I had tried to do some transfers which didn't come out the way I wanted. The magazine page way too heavy and the watercolor paper started to peel. They can faintly be seen,

Is London Bridge Falling Down Day 23

Day 23  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

We start with a concept and look for materials in that respect. This starts with random brayer marks. Lots of experiments, but there are lots of choices. Colors, how to tear, where to place these are choices. But in pieces like these that things happen accidentally, happy things! Pasting tissue paper is an art in itself. Used my silicon brush!
No doodling here!

Suffering Child Day 19

Day 19  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main theme of "jail" from a previous post.

I was haunted by a photo I saw in an album of l'oeil de la photographie of Ghetto images from early 1940's. Printed one of a young girl and tore it into several collage pieces, Added some color with Derwent inktense pencils and neocolor I crayons,  Decided to add a bit of hope in the form of flower and bird transfers. Will be using some of the wire fence scraps for another image.

Flowers Peeking Through Day 1

Here it is the beginning of September and we are in one of our summers heat waves. Inside and morning, fan running, I am feeling quite comfortable.

Just found out that the September 30 in 30 is on. Usually get a month more notice but this makes the challenge even more exciting. So I will be doing this challenge along with the e-course that I am taking with Pauline Agnew called Feeling the Pose.  I recently took an e-course From the Heart and this new course is a great follow up. Pauline is a great teacher, she manages to bring out the best in all her students with her short videos wonderful philosophy! Also, who can resist the musical Irish lilt?

So this challenge will be going with the flow! First days a few mixed media from my summer workshop and probably lots of figures.

New Starts and Paper Doll Tweak

Since I am having trouble big time with my lightbox on blogger I am going to try something new. Which didn't work so although they are clickable they may open too large to handle? Since I don't know what browser you use I can't know what you will see.

Running Wild in Golden Fields

A while back I posted a "new start" sort of abstract landscape. Think I have brought it to some conclusion after ruining it in the process. Well, we all know that the process is the most important part.  One thing I have learned about my way of working is that I can't drag a piece on and on. It's either there or not. I am expert on messing up good starts. I am not going to show what went between.

For some odd reason, my lightbox is NOT working! I am spending too much time on computer tech problems UGH!

I mentioned Topaz Studio in my last post and I want to write a little more about this fantastic software and I think a great tool. I know there is a discussion about the digital art etc. For me anyway, if a person can find an outlet for their creativity digitally it is kosher. I spent hours learning restorations and composites with Photoshop /Elements. My late brother, Eugene, did fantastically great composites. I will post some in another post.  I am familiar with the Topaz plug-ins that work with PS so when Studio came out I started to play around with it. It does have a learning curve and can be addictive. To make a long story short I won the lottery on one of the webinars Topaz runs for all the adjustments for Studio. Quite a WIN.

Besides restorations and composites and of course editing photos I really didn't get into digital painting. I felt the need for hands-on paper, paints knives etc. The smell of oil paints really turns me on. So how can this tool help me? Mainly I use it as a seeing tool.  I have not used photographs as a reference in quite a while because  I found myself tied to the details and not the essence of the image. Well, Studio can come to the rescue.

Here I used an image from my recent shoot at Beit Jimal. Scroll down to Family Picnic.
Just played around with one. Click to enlarge!

More Paper Dolls

Remember Paper Dolls Glue and one Great Mess? Well here is the sequel, or sequels I was so glad to see Jen's latest blog post. She wrote about "Notes to myself on beginning a painting - Richard Diebenkorn." Gave me the push I needed to play around more. Especially the chaos bit! We'll see what Reuven has to say.

What I did was throw the digital image into Topaz Studio and play around. Did I tell you that I WON the whole set of pro-adjustments for Topaz Studio! Decided it needed jazzing up! I am happy looking at this because it makes me smile! Topaz Studio is FREE!

I'm Off to the Ball

It's still pinkish! Reuven really loved it. Of course, everyone reads something different in each painting. He saw it more of a playoff of "Barbieism". Not really my intention. I will leave it for now!
After veiling with light grey pink the only thing I added was more color on the masking tape, which I will not reveal.  See the previous version

Oh Why Did I Pick That Horrid PINK

Maybe it was the thought of another "paper doll" painting.  Girly I may have thought! Don't even remember if it was a favorite color when I was a child. Although it just popped into my head that my Sweet Sixteen dress was a very pale pink tulle, not the gaudy pink in this. Now the question, should I change it before class or leave it to discuss with Reuven. Hey there, you know very well that Reuven is NOT going to tell you what to do. Question answered!

Family Picnic

We have at least 2 family picnics a year. Winter birthdays and summer birthdays. This year the winter birthdays were delayed, not important why! This was a special picnic because my youngest daughter and family will be embarking on 6 month trip to the Far East day after the Passover Seder, so it was a Bonjour picnic as well. Won't share my thoughts because they are really mixed up right now.

The picnic location was at Beit Jimal overlooking the valley Elah, where David and Goliath had their battle.(1 Sam. 17:2, 19), breathtaking even on an overcast day!  A few views. Click to enlarge

Paper Dolls Glue and one great Mess

Sometimes ideas run through our head. Some vanish before we can write the ideas down, but some are more persistent! I think Cookie has been nagging me because this paper doll thing doesn't go away.

As a child, I LOVED paper dolls. Most all my allowance money would be spent at the nearest 5 and 10 cent store.  My best friend Denise and I would spend hours playing, dressing etc. Until my father decided I had to grow up and trashed all my dolls.

Oh, and glue. When gluing these dolls made from newspaper, I guess I didn't quite screw the top on good and squeezing made a HUGE  puddle on the substrate. Spread out the glue and decided to dip them in and paste on another substrate. What a mess, some got deformed, lost a limb or head in the process. But in the end was better than the perfect way! Forgot to take a photo.

Well, this is the result. I have also cut out some more "dolls" for another, who knows maybe more!
