Sept 30x30 Challenge Collage

Collage Day   30 in 30

Another challenge is over! This was an exceptional challenge this month. First all the holidays, tomorrow Simchat Torah, an online course Feel the Pose, and 30 x 30! Tomorrow I feel like I will be going on vacation! Deserve a rest but not for long, want to keep up the creative momentum!

Flown the Coop Day 30

Day 30  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

Dealing with Instagram.. down to 657.... following... most of the time when I open my feed I do get my artist friends first...

Another jumble of shapes and colors.... actually enjoying the freedom of not having to please anyone and just go for it. Brayed background, collage pieces, inktense pencils, neocolor crayons, and Posca pen. Everything but the kitchen sink! Last day of the challenge.... I've flown the coop!

We Are With You Day29

Day 29  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

My experience with Instagram really pulled the rug from under me.. Today, however, I am more relaxed about the situation.

A sort of mixed up piece, a jumble of shapes and colors trying to get out! Veiled it with white and the wetness revealed the figures that were hidden. Win some lose some! A bit tired from the challenge, holidays etc...

All That Light Day 25

Day 25  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

I am really loving working with the printed tissue papers. Like the veiling effects.  A layer of random brayer marks, usually cleaning my brayer added collage pieces tissue paper pieces and added a bit of inktense pencils.

Time Is Running Out Day 24

Day 24  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

Collage of Gelli-printed tissue paper pieces on a background of brayer marks plus magazine collage. On the original background, I had tried to do some transfers which didn't come out the way I wanted. The magazine page way too heavy and the watercolor paper started to peel. They can faintly be seen,

Is London Bridge Falling Down Day 23

Day 23  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

We start with a concept and look for materials in that respect. This starts with random brayer marks. Lots of experiments, but there are lots of choices. Colors, how to tear, where to place these are choices. But in pieces like these that things happen accidentally, happy things! Pasting tissue paper is an art in itself. Used my silicon brush!
No doodling here!

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main theme of "jail" from a previous post.

On this, I put down fence marks with my wax crayons and added brayer marks! Some collaging with torn tissue paper prints and doodling with Inktense pencils.

My Haunted House Day 21

Day 21  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main theme of "jail" from a previous post.

The first layer where brayer marks of color. Added a tissue paper Gelli print. Found 2 tutorials on printing on tissue paper; Carolyn Dube and Gelli Arts so now I have a bunch of tissue paper prints.
The one here reminded me of a landscape so I pasted it whole. Added marks with my Inktense pencils and what do you know a haunted house appeared, thought at first a jailhouse. Whatever!
I am really having fun with this method of exploration and doodling.

Mythology a Modern Take

Our monthly challenge is a sort of mashup based on any mythological story. Sort of a modern-day interpretation. Decided on the story of Perseus and Madusa. My mashup, interpretation, is based on the fact that Perseus had to use a magic shield in order not to look at Medusa's face. Wonder Woman is my hero in the fight against domestic violence! I used domestic violence as an example of any social issue, it could be violence against animals, environmental, racial etc. On the shield, I placed some images over the face of Medusa. Well, the moral of the story is that we shouldn't hide issues in a mirror but face them head-on. A little far-fetched!

For this project, I made a digital composite in Photoshop and really enjoyed the process!

Collage Time February 30in30 2018

Decided this time to try to make my own collage in Photoshop! Didn't really realize that putting 30 layers and controlling their placement would be so challenging but once started there was no return. I am stubborn that way! I remembered the little box in PS when in moving tool, auto-select, that helped me immensely. Hey, I even added text!

This challenge was almost stress-free because I worked in series. Gelli printing makes that possible because you don't get the whole setup for printing just one, do you? My main time consumer was the extra photographing, editing, posting, titles etc. Hope to keep up the momentum, actually have 2 pieces left over, my workshop pieces to post, and 6 new at some stage of process.

Learned so much this month, Color combinations, composition, surprises, things not to do, paper qualities, probably lots more! Met some great new artists. A real treat, thank you, Leslie, for hosting and letting us publish on your site.

September Thirty in Thirty Collage 2017

September Thirty in Thirty Collage 2017

Here it is October 1 time to post our collage! Whether it was 30-days or less it's always a win-win!
A big thank you to Leslie Saeta our host!

When entering a challenge I am pretty obsessive about posting every day, so I spend time beforehand thinking what I am going to do, size, medium etc so that I can fulfill my own expectations. September is always a busy month because of the High Holidays (Jewish) and all the family gatherings and preparations.  This month I decided to cut a larger start and work from there to make 4 smaller entries. This helped a great deal and it was a very good learning experience. All these gems will go to make greeting cards. I love this opportunity to experiment. Some work out well, others not.

I would also like to point out some frustrations. When I look through all the entries and find one that I would really like to comment on many times there is no LINK. I realize that having a blog to post is a lot of work but there are lots of places to upload images that don't require that amount of workm after all it has photographed and is on your computer.  To name a few: Flickr, Instagram, and Google photos. Each allows commenting. Also, many times when clicking on a thumb I get to an online shop, sometimes the image there has no relationship to the one on the blog, and there is no place to comment. So stand by your work and let us give you a pat on the back!

For my last 2 entries, I am using an exercise from my online course that I am currently taking Monoprint and Collage given by Jane Davies. Scroll to the second workshop on the page.

I love collage and am starting to learn the technique of Gelli Printing. I first started with collage pieces and then added the printing process. My substrate was bigger than my Gelli pad so I had difficulty placing the layers of printing. I am still learning so decided to cut these (made 4) in half and add collage pieces and crayon which Jane states is part of the process. I may add more! Sorry, I didn't take photos before adding the print, they were under some heavy books so they wouldn't buckle after the collage process. I got the muse and took them out and started... can't really stop the muse when it comes, and it was already evening anyway.

Jen Walls had an interesting post about change. We in our workshop group are having to make changes this year and have a new teacher/mentor. Sometimes change is difficult, hopefully, this will be an easy one. My heart and prayers are with Heleni who has helped me develop my creative work.

I was hoping not to use these but sometimes life gets in the way. The start was made quite a while ago and was left mainly because I didn't like it. What I should have done is to mess it up before cutting. Lesson learned. So didn't really make it different than what was there and they are all too sugar coated! Saccharin!!! UGH! Well, I will either make cards or just cover them. Have to use oils or oil pastels. Have to do something!
