More Transfer Experiments

I seem to be wandering all about. Did experiments in Gelli Plate transfers that didn't finish. Workshop figure studies to post and continue. This morning couldn' sleep so did some experiments in mono-printing on my Gelli plate. Hey there Carol, FOCUS!

OK, photographed the transfers so I can post. Seems every time I look and photograph there is something to tweak. Have to stop somewhere, they are really just experiments. Really was feeling the technique and if something worked it was just luck!

Gel transfers references should be high contrasted. The first step with dark colors and second with lighter. These are fun to do, can be addictive. Lots of trial and error. I worked on the print with my wax crayons and decided to make use of the map as a frame.

Gelli Printing Transfers

Wow, October already! September challenges finished. New year, new start. Workshop tomorrow YAY!

During September I did some experimenting with transfers with Gelli printing. Really tricky need just the right contrast image and paint combinations. But, whatever the outcome, there is always something to work with.

Brayered the reference with some colors and used sections as collage pieces. Added watercolor and wax crayons. Love how the crayons lay on the acrylic. After photographing I see more interesting shapes I may develop.

Flown the Coop Day 30

Day 30  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

Dealing with Instagram.. down to 657.... following... most of the time when I open my feed I do get my artist friends first...

Another jumble of shapes and colors.... actually enjoying the freedom of not having to please anyone and just go for it. Brayed background, collage pieces, inktense pencils, neocolor crayons, and Posca pen. Everything but the kitchen sink! Last day of the challenge.... I've flown the coop!

We Are With You Day29

Day 29  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

My experience with Instagram really pulled the rug from under me.. Today, however, I am more relaxed about the situation.

A sort of mixed up piece, a jumble of shapes and colors trying to get out! Veiled it with white and the wetness revealed the figures that were hidden. Win some lose some! A bit tired from the challenge, holidays etc...

The Hardest Part is Waiting Day 28

Day 28  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

Second, of the photographs, I saw in the album in Eye of the Photography  A young boy waiting to get the institution uniform. Could feel his loneliness in the harsh photo, hope I succeeded as well.

Hope They Will See the Light Day 27

Day 27  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

It's hard to see youths behind bars! Not a happy image but hope will come through the window.
Brayered color, charcoal, and pencil drawing, collage printed tissue paper, and inktense pencils.
I subscribe to the Eye of the Photography and found these haunting images of a detention center in Hungary.  Every day I get to view interesting photography albums.

All That Light Day 25

Day 25  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

I am really loving working with the printed tissue papers. Like the veiling effects.  A layer of random brayer marks, usually cleaning my brayer added collage pieces tissue paper pieces and added a bit of inktense pencils.

Time Is Running Out Day 24

Day 24  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main concept of "jail" from a previous post.

Collage of Gelli-printed tissue paper pieces on a background of brayer marks plus magazine collage. On the original background, I had tried to do some transfers which didn't come out the way I wanted. The magazine page way too heavy and the watercolor paper started to peel. They can faintly be seen,

Day 22  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main theme of "jail" from a previous post.

On this, I put down fence marks with my wax crayons and added brayer marks! Some collaging with torn tissue paper prints and doodling with Inktense pencils.

My Haunted House Day 21

Day 21  30 in 30

Mixed media on watercolor paper. Continuation of the main theme of "jail" from a previous post.

The first layer where brayer marks of color. Added a tissue paper Gelli print. Found 2 tutorials on printing on tissue paper; Carolyn Dube and Gelli Arts so now I have a bunch of tissue paper prints.
The one here reminded me of a landscape so I pasted it whole. Added marks with my Inktense pencils and what do you know a haunted house appeared, thought at first a jailhouse. Whatever!
I am really having fun with this method of exploration and doodling.

Who Doesn't like to Scribble

Recently in one of Jane Davies post, she demonstrated an interesting technique using wax pastels and crayons with printing. Here the video from Gelliarts.

Two Birds on One Post

During the month of February, I took part in Leslie Seata's 30 in 30 challenge. These two are the last of the one of the series that I made. Sort twins in a way because I used the same masks.

Decided to take these a step further with the use of masks and a bit of cleaning.

Collage Time February 30in30 2018

Decided this time to try to make my own collage in Photoshop! Didn't really realize that putting 30 layers and controlling their placement would be so challenging but once started there was no return. I am stubborn that way! I remembered the little box in PS when in moving tool, auto-select, that helped me immensely. Hey, I even added text!

This challenge was almost stress-free because I worked in series. Gelli printing makes that possible because you don't get the whole setup for printing just one, do you? My main time consumer was the extra photographing, editing, posting, titles etc. Hope to keep up the momentum, actually have 2 pieces left over, my workshop pieces to post, and 6 new at some stage of process.

Learned so much this month, Color combinations, composition, surprises, things not to do, paper qualities, probably lots more! Met some great new artists. A real treat, thank you, Leslie, for hosting and letting us publish on your site.

Day 29 30in30

Haven't really felt this month go by and here it is the first of March. One more day and finito! I really don't want this roll to end!

I loved the muted sense of crowd that somehow got lost in the process. But I did get a reward in the hidden garden!

Day 27 30in30

Working on this present series of nine images I am no longer afraid of the last stage where I go in and modify, clean, edit the print stage. I think that the reason of my fear was that this stage is more a controlled process whereby the collage stage and print stage not controlled and I like accidents,

In this particular piece, I modified using my Caran D'ache Neocolor I oil and wax crayons

Day 26 30in30

This one has a story.

Brought the image after printing to class.

Thought I would add a sketch.

Didn't work out. Erased!

Decided to take off the tissue collage.

Took off parts of the first magazine image.

Tried fixing with paint.

Added piece of transparent collage. NADA

Luckily pasted with stick glue so it peeled off.

Result below.  Mysterious, weird, scary!

And, on top of all that, didn't photograph well!
