Just Some more Intuitive Sketches

Have really lost track of what I have shown here. I have been publishing mostly on Instagram.  So here are a few since my last post " A Bit Fishy"

I still have a lot to learn with these exercises. One, best to work on light paper. Tried a few with a brown paper and found it difficult to get what I wanted. Lots to learn about simplicity of shapes and colors. What to leave and what to take away. That's all part of the process. I love process!

These are not in any special order!

Six Word Stories

Just read an interesting newsletter by Susan Flanagan describing this process. Can't find anything on her site/blog so can't show a link. She decided to use this formula to describe some of her recent paintings. What a fabulous idea... wonder how that will work on my abstracts? Shouldn' be hard to find 6 words!

Getting Used to Small

The day you stop doing the small things is the day you think you're above everybody else. Kevin Hart

I found this small sketch pad hidden on one of my shelves. Think it's A5 size with real heavy watercolor paper perfect for my small intuitive sketches. 10 more pages YAY!

Some More Intuitive Sketches

Learning is different. Learning is something we get to do, it’s a dance, an embrace, a chance to turn on some lights.

You don’t take a workshop. You are part of one. Seth Godin

Learning to Cover Up

My goal is to surprise myself. (Peter William Brown)

I just love starts. They are the 3 Fs! Free Fast Fresh! But they are mostly NOT done. What to add and mostly what to hide, cover-up!

This was one of the sketches I did for Stan's Intuitive Sketch workshop. What a mess, but I liked it. Sometimes I just freeze with fear, not the best word! Today I took myself in hand. This one took 3 layers!

Diving off the High Board

Getting out of messes is really what it's all about, problem solving. Stan Kurth

I was first introduced to Stan Kurth through Jen Jovan and immediately fell in love with his work.  At the time he only did one to one workshops so since living in Israel it was sort off limits for me. Well, the pandemic changed a lot of things and Stan has gone online and I took part in his first one-day workshop The Intuitive Sketch .

For me, it was like diving off the high board. Mainly because of the medium that I have shied away from, watercolor and gouache, and penwork. But I was so surprised when working that it was almost like working with oils. Yes a strange comparison I know, but this medium kept that paints alive and not dead like with acrylics. Even the paints in the palette can be used. And watercolor is so portable and making small compositions can be done almost anywhere. WIN-WIN!
I may even challenge myself to a 100-day challenge. I bought some gouache tubes more than 5 years ago, and my watercolor set a year and a half. It's about time they got some use! Always fun with new/old toys

This was sent in for critique. He liked the balance and the color gradations. Made a point of the strong line element. One suggestion was to lighten the top area above the bird's head.

I learned that I have to rely on my instincts and be bolder even when treading in new territory!

Dancing Lines Finale

All large tasks are completed in a series of starts. (Neil Fiore)

Remember my dancing lines? Well I think I have brought them to some sort of finale! Well until I decide otherwise!

Did some white Posca dots, did some veiling, more crayons, and new orientations. When I did some veiling some of the watercolor crayon marks bled.

New Roads

This morning while checking my mail I opened Chris Lalley's blog and aside from her lovely painting was a quote that I really connected to.
"If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there."
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
I feel that I am traveling roads that I don't know where they are going, in hopes that they will take me to where ever I am going.I just hope I will know when I get there! Speaking of roads I have to mention Frost's beautiful poem The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Robert Frost
Yesterday I was feeling out of sorts. Maybe I was incubating something. Rested most of the day reading, watching TV, napping. In the evening felt up to tackling my dancing lines project. I had already cut them into four parts and they had been in my view all day.  The question rose, still in bed I remembered that at one time I had bought a small, and I mean small, set of gouache paints. They seemed a good choice for the situation, although I had never painted with them. I bought them in the anticipation of an artist that was to make a webinar on gouache that never materialized. So I took them out of their hiding place, took a few of my Rosemary Ivory brushes, and with a small jar of water on my side table went to work. It was a juggling act but worked itself out.

These are all  18 x 21 cm. Two I rotated and two were kept the same. Click to enlarge and view in the light box.

Hope to be traveling a new road some time today. May take them outside in the sun.

Experimental Stuff WIP

A while back Heleni suggested a challenge working with a partner and adopting something about their work and using it in our own creation.  My creation was supposed to be from the wonderful backgrounds Traudi does which I hadn't really captured.

So I decided to get help and brought 2 cloth covered panels plus gouache paints, the kind that children use, to class and Traudi showed me how to achieve the various patterns... She takes a sheet of paper ,I had plain brown paper, and she squishes out the colors, usually 2 hues, and randomly prints with these colors on the canvas....

I am doing "my " thing with them... and am also using the sheets of paper as well... these are WIP...there is a lot to explore in these methods... making use of the shapes for you imagination....

Traudi uses markers and cut torn colored paper for her creations....I am using drawing tools like charcoal and oil pastels....

Here is  the work Traudi did on the challenge... she adopted my use of children in some of my paintings.
