California Coast Sketch

This is another try using grays ,,, workshop #24 Richard Robinson using photo #2 from his references of the California coast.  I am calling this a oil sketch rather than a painting. I did this at my weekly workshop using just a B&W reference print.... Small format 21 x 28 and not as free as I would like... oil on 400 grm  sketch pad.

Felt it needed tweaking and debated whether to go back with oils or oil crayons... oil crayons won out....
Don't think it made much of an improvement!!!

Wait a minute, what was wrong with it in the first place? I think it had lovely variety in the blues and greys. Very restful!

Interesting. Both versions are beautiful and I think you changed the weather with what you did. That was the impression I got. The water moved and the wind was different and the light was different. I'd say either stop tweaking like that or when you do, just be sure to document the changes. Maybe if you went back to the reference and did it as a series, or did that with another reference, it'd be cool. Both of them were equally good to me, just different moods and atmosphere.

Thanks Robert I always appreciate your feedback... I don't think the photo of the tweak does is very good came out a bit lighter than it is... may do a second photo... I plan to do all the references of the lesson as a series, and maybe do some tighter crops....

Looking forward to it. Darker would just strengthen that perception of "weather changed" though, will have to see how it looks. It's a type of change that fascinate me and I will have to play with the idea myself sometime.
